In 2009, we had singled out some special keynote themes: the principal focus was on the anniversaries of three great composers – the 250th anniversary of Händel’s death, the 200th of Haydn’s death, and the 200th of Mendelssohn’s birth. Of contemporaries, we showcased the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin in two concerts.

In 2008, the Rheingau Music Festival was already anticipating the Haydn Year with a series of carefully chosen concerts. Another keynote theme was dedicated to »Celestial Life«. And in the field of chamber music, the »à trois – a tre – zu dritt« series permutated the multifarious options provided by a trio line-up.

In 2007, the Rheingau Music Festival could look back in pride on 20 years of success. When the first season got under way in 1988, few would have dreamed that 20 years later the Rheingau Music Festival would form an integral part of the world’s cultural landscape.

The 2006 season was themed primarily around Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth. Two other anniversaries were also duly celebrated, with works by Robert Schumann and Dmitry Shostakovich.

In 2005, some rather special works and compositions were themed around »Souvenir de voyage«, a series that showcased works telling of journeys and wanderings, of far-off places and of strange and wonderful lands.
