The history of the Barons of Langwerth von Simmern in the Rheingau dates back to 1464, when Johann Langwerth von Simmern was rewarded for his services as Chancellor to Duke Ludwig von Pfalz-Zweibrücken with 32 2/3 acres of “Hattenheimer Mannberg” in fief. The family took up permanent residence in the Rheingau in 1472, following the purchase of Hattenheim Castle. In 1711, after buying the Stockheimer Hof estate, the family moved to Eltville, the cultural centre of the Rheingau. The Stockheimer Hof was where the mother of Baron von Stein was born in 1721. The purchase of the Lichtenstern'scher Hof in 1753 saw the basic outline take shape of the present-day estate: the two buildings dominate the scenery of the Langwerther Hof and frame the manorial park between them.
