St. Stephan, Mainz
The Catholic parish church of St. Stephan’s in Mainz was founded in 990 by Archbishop Willigis, who had also built Mainz Cathedral, on the highest point in the city. In its present-day form, St. Stephan’s is a triple-naved Gothic hall church with choirs at the east and west, and a large octagonal bell-tower above the West Choir.
Once restoration work on the church had been completed (in the mid-1970s), following severe damage in the war, the then vicar, Klaus Mayer, succeeded in persuading Marc Chagall to design the glass window. With 177 m² of stained glass, Marc Chagall has bequeathed St. Stephan’s Church his largest work in this material.
