The church of the Parish of St. Aegidius is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture. The Basilica in Mittelheim is the only church in the Rheingau that has survived from the 12th century without any major changes to the original structure. St. Aegidius is a former monastery church of the Augustinian Order. Initially a home to the monks, the monastery was in the early 13th century taken over by nuns, and (following the Arch-Bishop’s ban on accepting novices) died out in 1257. Thereupon the church was handed over to the community and by 1353 the parish had been established.
