St. Martin, Lorch

It is in 1254 that we find the first mention in the records of a St. Martin parish, based on a sizable church from the Romanesque era. Construction of the new Gothic church began in 1270/80, and proceeded in several phases until its final completion in the mid-15th century. In 1554 the belfry and the church’s roof perished in a fire. The renovation work lasted until the end of the 16th century, and in the subsequent centuries, too, St. Martin was refurbished several times. The church’s lavishly decorated interior is dominated by the high altar, dating back to 1483.
