Toshio Hosokawa

Born in Hiroshima in 1955, Toshio Hosokawa’s education was already shaped by intercultural cross-fertilisation between East and West. He studied composition in Tokyo, Berlin (at the College of Arts under Isang Yun) and Freiburg (at the College of Music under Klaus Huber). He has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Composition Prize of the Young Generation in Europe (1985), the Energia Music Award in Hiroshima (1995) and the Duisburg Music Prize (1998). Hosokawa’s compositions cover orchestral works, solo concerts, chamber music pieces, music for traditional Japanese instruments, and film scores. He lives in Tokyo and Mainz.
